Test Your
knowledge
Are you prepared to write your own Confined Space Program?
Question: David is preparing to enter an enclosed space with a dirt floor. What atmospheric factors need to be taken into consideration and measured to ensure he will not be put at risk?Answer: The configuration of the space may limit air movement. The dirt floor introduces the threat of mould and spores that could affect David’s breathing (short-term and long-term, especially if he has allergies or a compromised immune system). This warrants proper respiratory protection as well as disposable coveralls. Spores also consume oxygen, which could lead to an oxygen-deficient atmosphere. This means that in addition to having a properly calibrated and bumped atmospheric monitor, ventilation and/or a supplied air respirator may be needed.
